These red letters--as I said, the idea comes from a novel. Perhaps you don't have it in your world. It's about a woman who commits adultery and, for her punishment, is made to wear a scarlet letter 'A' representing her sin. That way everyone knows what she did and can punish her even while she isn't imprisoned.
