misterblackbird: (My Bryonic Heroism)
It seems I am in the company of a raven today--very close company.

I was transformed into a raven once before, on one rare occasion when I wasn't changed into a cat. And I've certainly seen enough ravens in my own world to know quite well what they look like.

Not that any of that really helps when one wakes tethered to such a creature.

I've woken with animals around before, for one reason and another, but I don't think I've ever actually had one leashed to me--and been leashed to one myself. I shan't ask what Riff thought of it, seeing it tied to me this morning.

The cats are, wisely perhaps, spending the day hidden away somewhere.

But, strictly speaking, it's not so horrid a curse as it could be. Certainly neither this raven nor I are especially fond of one another. I'd rather not let it, with its beak and claws, all that near to my face. And it would very likely prefer to be somewhere above the City or out in the woods. But it's not made a move against me as yet, nor would I make a move against it. I've heard tell of a few people who've killed the birds bound to them. I suppose that's one way to deal with them, but then one does have to contend with their corpses, since I doubt these chains will break so easily as by death. Better to bear with the birds, as I see it, since they're not especially worth the trouble of killing them.

Anyway, maybe I'm flattering myself, but I think this raven almost suits me--better than some songbird or gaudy parrot might. If we'd been properly introduced and not just bound together because of a curse, perhaps we could even get along with one another.

I suppose the only real problem with the creature is when I come too close to anything that catches its interest--mirrors, for example, and the screen of my Network device, or anything with any sort of a shine to it at all. So that means more than a few items in my room, in the cafe, and in the opera house have caught its attention. We had more than a few battles along the way as it decided to see to something and I decided to keep moving, and the chain between us reminded us of our situation

But, really, it seems halfway intelligent, given the way its managed to stack teaspoons, open a few clasps and buttons, and even guess in which hand I've hidden a bit of bread. I had always heard that ravens were fairly intelligent--perhaps we can keep one another entertained for the afternoon.

But it's only halfway intelligent, since it does seem to persist in trying to fly away. It realised the chain between us is to blame soon enough, though I could do without it pecking at it, really. I don't know if it sees it as another shiny bauble to play with or something really to be destroyed so it can finally fly to freedom. I have to bear with this as much as it does, and I would appreciate some patience on its part, if that is at all possible.

At least it seems content enough in between these attempts at escape to sit on my shoulder, leave my hat and buttons alone, and let me feed it scraps.

Although, now that I think about it, I could do without it crowing too.

As long as I can keep it happy, I suppose we can endure this curse together, it and I.

[ooc: Cain, lucky boy, gets to have a raven tethered to him for the day. It's an uneasy truce at present... Just a heads up: replies may be delayed a bit! Ironically, I have to take my IRL pet finches to the vet to get their nails trimmed...]
