Entry 407; Day 537
Jun. 9th, 2010 04:54 pmI'm not sure I've ever been sold before--certainly, I don't recall it, if it's happened. Nor have I ever been auctioned off to the highest bidder. But, apparently, I have now experienced both.
And shall I congratulate you, Princess Rosella, in your winning bids placed on me? I'm told you've won me. What will you do with me now that you've won me?
Really, when is the last time anyone's heard of a princess bidding on and buying an earl? And apparently my hat was part of the sale. I should at least have some say over the sale of my hat, thank you.
Well, I've been bought and sold, but I've seen no change come for it. And I think I bid on a few sales myself, though I'm not sure what's to come of those either. After all, it was a curse.
And now the 'deities' are demanding that we write essays for them. And on the topic of 'equivalence' no less. This seems to be no curse, though. I know they themselves have claimed that a 'good' essay will earn one some payment against a curse--a trade inverted, since we've all heard the stories of the trades the 'deities' make. I'm not sure I believe them, though. And why should I, of course? I know there was a time when there was a reward--and a very real reward, as it turned out--offered for a creature that had escaped into the City. And they offered up cake readily enough that day it rained from the sky earlier this spring. But after all they've done, should I trust them now? If we're to speak about 'equivalence', perhaps we ought to look at them first.
It is an interesting topic, I suppose. I'll try my hand at it, once I've collected my thoughts.
Meanwhile, for those who've not heard, my sister, Merry, has come back into the City. Yes, I did say 'back', Merry, though I know you don't remember it. You were here beforetwice--. But it doesn't matter that you were here before. You're here now, and I'm glad of it--as much as one can be--and that's what matters. The City is hardly a safe place for her--it never has been--but I am glad that she's here. And I shall have to see about setting up tutors for here again, and introducing her to my acquaintances. And she will be staying here with me, Princess Rue. I hope she'll be able to make your acquaintance, along with Fakir's and Ahiru's. Likewise, He-Who-Kills, I'm sure you recall my sister.
Perhaps it does seem an impossible thing to be even remotely happy in the City, but first Riff was let in to find me, and now Merry's been brought back too. I'm very glad to have them back with me. Yes, the better thing would be for all three of us to be in London, where we belong. But we're yet together, which is as it should be.
And my father is nowhere to be found--He's long gone, and so much of that was by my hand--Do I even dare to think that I could make a heaven out of this hell again?--That we three could live as we wanted here, happily, the way I dreamed before?--It's been so long since I even dared think of it--Merry and Riff--They're all I've ever wanted here, they can make this place bearable--Could we?--
Merry, have you been finding your way about the opera house well enough? You're probably thrilled by all the secret passages and hidden staircases. And your Network device--has that been simple enough for you? I'm sure Kassandra and Noir have taken to you already. You know you need only find me for any of it, as ever. The City is no place for you, really, but I'm glad you're here with me. Don't go out wandering. I'd rather not have you getting lost in the City so soon after you've arrived. We'll go out, though, if you'd like.
Miss Reinette, since there doesn't seem to be a curse today, perhaps you'll be at home this afternoon. I should be glad to pay a call on you for tea--and to see your new skill with you electric teakettle. Also, if you and she are both so inclined, I could introduce you to my sister. I think the pair of you would get along very well, and you would certainly be a worthwhile acquaintance for her to make. It would certainly round out the table very nicely, since I understand Rudy may be there as well.
Either way, we shall certainly have to arrange the details of our picnic, and we'll have to choose something of a date for it and be quite ready to move it to the day after, if need be. I think you really must see Xanadu.

[ooc: Whew. Lots to talk about. Cain is, oddly, a happy camper--well, nervous regarding Merry in the City, but otherwise...happy!Cain. A rarity! Also, if you want to have a "Missed Connection" with Cain, just let me know :3 You're welcome to see him or have him see your character.]
